  • Two is the Magic Number: The Importance of Double Cleansing

Lets face it. Cleansing is the first and most important part of our daily skincare routine but are we performing this mundane task properly?

Double cleansing is one of the most important (and under appreciated) elements of a skincare routine.  Think about all the products we put on our skin, as well as the elements which we can’t see; skincare creams, SPF, make-up and environmental pollutants are all left on the skin at the end of the day. Without the second cleanse, we are not able to remove the same level of make-up, oil and environmental dirt that we can with just one cleanse.

On the second cleanse, you are able to penetrate deeper into the skin and allow the cleanser to work more effectively, removing every last trace of these elements, leaving softer, brighter and cleaner skin than you could ever imagine. This is a practice which has been followed for centuries in Japan and is a core-element of our advanced skincare facials at our clinic.
cleanserHowever, an effective double cleanse is not simply a ’round-two’ of your normal cleanser. Follow these steps to discover healthier skin:

Step One: Select an oil-based cleanser for your initial cleanse. This will help to dissolve excess oil, make-up and impurities on the skins’ surface. We recommend Environ’s AVST Pre-Cleansing Oil. It is fantastic at dissolving residue on the skin, without leaving your skin feeling excessively tight and dry.

Step Two: It isn’t necessary to invest in a new plethora of skin cleansers to begin your new life as a double-cleanser. The cleansing cream or milk which you are currently using is absolutely fine. Once you have used this up, keep the following tip in mind. Select a second cleanser which focuses on your main skincare concern (hydrating, radiance, anti-ageing etc.). By incorporating a cleanser which can address your skin-specific issues you are not only cleansing the skin, but moreover treating the skin. Cleansing balms such as Elemis’ Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm is fantastic for clients concerned with anti-ageing or Guinot’s Lait Hydra Confort for those suffering from dryness and dehydration.

Although double cleansing morning and night would earn you a Lesley Leale-Green Skin Edit ‘Gold Star’, for those of you just beginning this routine, start-off with double cleansing at night time only for the first couple of weeks. We recommend towelling face-flannels over muslin skin-cloths; the flanneling provides a little extra, gentle exfoliation and helps to lift more surface dirt. Use warm water (not hot) and pat dry after removal. By following this ritual, the skincare products you apply after double cleansing are able to penetrate more deeply; resulting in smoother and younger skin cells on the surface of the skin and more effective use of your serums and night creams.
